I am available to teach oboe private lessons for beginners to professionals. I teach out of my home in San Francisco, but I do make house calls. I currently teach in the following San Francisco Bay Area cities: Burlingame, Cupertino, Menlo Park, Los Altos, Palo Alto, San Carlos, and San Francisco. If I travel a great distance to your home, the rates will adjust accordingly. Please contact me for the exact rate.

2010-2011 Private Oboe Lesson Rates
$65 for 60 minutes (advanced students)
$55 for 45 minutes (intermediate students)
$45 for 30 minutes (beginners only!)

Required Materials
I expect you to come prepared to each and every lesson. In order for the lesson to be a successful one, please make sure you always bring the following:

* An Oboe, in good working condition
* Reeds and Reed Case
You must bring at least two reeds to each lesson. Your reeds must be stored in a reed case and not in the original container.
Making reeds: I do teach reed making. If you are interested in pursuing this, please let me know. If you already make your own reeds, please bring your reed making supplies with you to each lesson.
Buying reeds: There are many wonderful options out there.  You can either purchase reeds from me (current students may purchase reeds for $12 each; at least one week  notice is required) or from other suppliers. Please contact me  for a list of other suppliers before purchasing reeds from an outside source as there are some "better" places/individuals to go to. Beginning students should purchase medium soft reeds. More advanced students should purchase medium reeds. Do not purchase fibercane reeds.
* Tuner and Metronome
There are many inexpensive options available. Please let me know before purchasing one.
* Pencil and Assignment Book (preferably with staff lines)
* A
ll assigned music
I usually begin with the Rubank or Gekeler Method books. As the student becomes more advanced, I will assign duets and/or solo literature and more advanced etudes (Ferling and Barret).
* Music stand

Practicing
Learning how to play the oboe requires dedication, enthusiasm, and lots of patience! It is a challenging instrument to learn. Therefore, regular and consistent practice is required! In order to make the most of our lessons, I expect you to practice at least 5 days a week. Each practice session should be a minimum of 20 minutes for beginner students, 30 minutes for intermediate students, and 45 minutes for advanced students. Longer practice sessions are encouraged, but not required.

Cancellations
24-hour notice is required if you will not be able to attend your lesson, unless you must cancel because of sudden illness or family emergency (max. of 3 per semester). I would prefer to hear by 12pm the previous day. If ample notice is not given, payment for the missed lesson is still expected.

Lesson Rescheduling
If you must cancel because of a conflict, I will do my best to re-schedule your lesson. However, it may not be possible to have the lesson at your house on another day. Therefore, if you would like a make-up lesson and I cannot come to your house, it may be necessary for you to come to my house in SF for that lesson. Weekend lessons are fine for make-ups. If I must cancel, I will do my best to re-schedule the missed lesson to Friday afternoons or other available times that I may have during the week.

Payment
Payment is due at the beginning of the month for that month's lessons. If reeds are purchased during the course of the month, they will be added to next month's payment.

Please contact me if you are interested in lessons.
